Sharp Pain Under My Rib Cage When I Breathe In Deep

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is this lump in my stomach and how do i get rid of it?
its a hard lump that was never there. in the middle rite under my chest where my rib cage meets. inside that little upside down "v" ur rib cage makes" i can feel a pain coming from it wen i sniff really hard or yawn or take a deep breath. its like a sharp pain.

    • ANSWER:
There is a bone there, at the bottom center of the sternum (rib cage) called the xiphoid process. It's normal. You might not have noticed it before if it wasn't causing you pain. That is also where your diaphram is (the muscle that controls breathing)

Is the area painful to the touch or only when you breath? If it's painful to the touch it could be muscle pain. Have you injured that area? Have you had a bad cough that could have pulled a muscle?

If it is painful just from breathing and yawning it is something inside the chest causing you problems. Are you sick or have asthma?

In either case I would see a doctor if the pain doesn't go away soon. Good luck!

  2. QUESTION:
What could be causing the sharp pain in my ribs?
I am 39 weeks pregnant. For the past 2 days I have had a sharp pain in my ribs. I woke up one morning and they just hurt. On the right side right under my breast. Could it just be bruising from my baby kicking me or? It hurts to breathe in deep or to turn my upper body in any direction. It hurts to get up and down.

    Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Your rib cage is expanding while you are pregnant... allowing you to breath deeper so you have more air for baby. So it could be this movement that is causing you pain. Also, often times babies kick upwards... so you might be getting kicked in the ribs. Sorry... I know how you feel. I had the same feeling for 3-4 weeks while pregnant. It goes away. :)

  3. QUESTION:
What dose it mean when you have a sharp pain in your chest?
When I inhale too deeply I got this sharp pain in my chest. It was in my ribcage, near where the rib would line up under the edge of my left breast right next to where the two sides of my ribcage converge in the middle. I was leaning back against a pillow that is up against my headboard and when I sat up and held my breath for a little while the pain went away. What is this pain?

    • ANSWER:
You have a pinched muscle in your back. some of the muscles in the rib cage area refer the pain forward and you feel it in your chest rather than in the back. Other times the muscles tighten up the around the rib cage and it makes it hard to get a breathe in because the ribs can't move. You can release the muscles in your back to get rid of this pain by doing this:
      Back:
      (do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and find the muscles next to your spine and firmly press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling.

  4. QUESTION:

Sharp pain right under ribs on right side?
There is a pain right under my ribs on the right side. It will stay the same for a while then it gets worse. It hurts to laugh and move and almost anything now. I've taken aspirin and pain reliever and if it will work it hasn't yet. If it gets a lot worse i will go see a doctor but is there any idea of what it is?

    • ANSWER:
Under the right rib cage, or part of the rib cage, are the liver, gall bladder, first part of the small intestine, the muscles between ribs, the diaphragm, the linings of the ribs and the lungs, etc... Sometimes it is irritation of a nerve, or of the lining of the ribs or lungs, that leads to brief sharp pains.
