Frequently Asked Questions

What does sharp pain under the right side rib cage mean?
Occasionally if I move a certain way or breathe or lay a certain way I'll get a sharp pain under my right rib cage. I can't move or even breathe because it feels like someone is pulling the muscle the other way when I do. It hurts so bad and i'm worried it could be something worse than just a sudden pain.

    • ANSWER:
Last year I went to my dr for a pain very similar to yours. It was on my left side, and it felt like it was under my ribs. Actually, it ended up being the intercostal muscle of the ribs. Everyone has these muscles in between each rib. It can begin to spasm causing the pain due to excessive exercising, coughing, laughing, or anything that uses these muscles. He put me on a muscle relaxer to relax the muscle and taught me a breathing exercise which made the pain go away instantly. Take a deep breath, hold it in, and while you're holding it in, push your stomach out and count to ten while doing this. Repeat two more times. It helped stretch the muscle out and the pain went away!
I would check with your dr to make sure it is nothing serious though.

  4. QUESTION:
Slight pain under right rib cage and i'm struggling to catch a breath. What could it be?
Okay, so I went body boarding yesterday and it was pretty choppy with strong currents and last night I started finding it hard to catch a breath. I woke up feeling fine and now the pain is back under my right rib cage and i'm struggling to breathe properly again. I tried ringing the doctors but they are booked until the 6th September and I don't want to cause a fuss as it's my father's birthday tomorrow.

I don't know what to do, has anyone else had anything like this happen?

    • ANSWER:
It is likely a muscle cramp. Try taking ibuprofen 800mg with food and tylenol 1000mg assuming you don't have gastric ulcers, renal disease, liver disease or are pregnant.

Only take these meds x 1 to see if you feel better. If so, then continue taking ibuprofen and tylenol three times a day for 3 days.

If you don't feel better after one dose, I'd check into an urgent care center to rule out pulmonary contusion, rib fracture, pneumothorax, etc.

  5. QUESTION:
Why am I getting sharp pains under my left rib cage?
I've been getting sharp pains under my left rib cage lately that come and go. When I get them it's to the point where I am in tears and it hurts to breathe and hurts to move. I am not sure what this could be. I am a 19 year old female who has never really had any other stomach problems so I'm not sure what to do.

    • ANSWER:
See your doctor, I had something similar and it turned out to be pneumonia. You've probably pulled something but it doesn't hurt to get checked out.
