Right Shoulder Blade Pain Deep Breath

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Why am I having pain between my shoulder blades?
This has gotten progressively worse over the past few months. Now its almost constant. Its between my shoulder blades and now I can feel it around my clavicles and it sometimes hurts to take deep breaths. My doctor is a douche and can't give me straight answers on what it could be. Can anyone help!

    • ANSWER:
The most common cause of this type of pain will be rib related. The rib joint is very small and can suddenly tighten with breathing - especially if you are having lower back pain also.

Just think of how you walk. Your left leg goes forward and at the same time your right arm moves forward - your lower back and the area between your shoulder blade work in tandem. So if you are having some sciatica your lower back will be tighter than it should, which in turn will cause tightness in your upper back.

With time this tension builds and builds. Until one day you move in a certain direction, take a breath and your rib shifts creating your pain.

I know this sounds complex, but as I am a Chiropractor, trust me, this is the most likely scenario. The muscles between the ribs are small and spasm quickly. They also are used when you breathe.

Don't worry though, although very painful the rib will settle within a week or so, quicker if you relax the area, don't over strain with activity and use a natural anti-inflammatory. If pain doesn't start to ease in a few days - seek help and possibly medical anti-inflammatories.

As for the sciatica, get it looked at. There are many self help techniques you can use which will relieve it - visit The Back Pain Advisor http://www.back-pain-advisor.com/index.h… and do their free e-course. It has a lot of techniques you can do at home to help.

Otherwise consult a Chiropractor, Osteopath or your doctor for help.

  2. QUESTION:
Pain in center of shoulder blades and goes all the way up to left side of neck?
When ever I stand up and take a deep breath I have a pain that goes all the way from the center of my shoulder blades to the whole left side of my neck. My neck was hurting yesterday too, so could this just be a pinched nerve or something else?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it is pinched nerve or nerve inflammation. But the thing you are missing is the name of the nerve. it is facet nerve. Irritation or inflammation of this nerve causes pain in any part of spine & neck. You can also feel stiffness in these areas.
You can take a hot bath to release the stiffness. Then do some stretches to calm your nerves. Here, I'm going to paste the link of the app which helped me to remove the pain through exercises.

  3. QUESTION:
How long does it take for a back strain muscle to heal?
Its on my back on my shoulder blade sorta thing, my upper back, how long will it take to heal? im in very bad pain Deap Heat wont help, it hurts when i; Cough - blow my nose - sneeze - take a deep breath or tense up or move in certain directions :( i cant even remember how i done it, it only came on today & no i didnt sleep the wrong way, i woke up fine.
Sorry, Deep Heat - not deap heat.

    • ANSWER:
Hey sounds like you have a vertibrate out of line or pinching a nerve. Try going to a chiropractor or use ice packs. If it is inflamed heat will only make it worse. Good luck.

  4. QUESTION:
I have a sharp pain between my shoulder blades?
When I take a deep breath in, I get a very sharp pain right between my shoulder blades, and I have no clue what it is?
Also, right below my rib cage i'm getting pains. It's not a stomach ache pain though. I have no clue why my body is acting so strangely. And i'm starting to get pains just below my stomach, kind of like cramps but it's not cramps, it's completely different.
    I'm terrified.

    • ANSWER:
Try to have someone give you a massage, and it will go away. It could be trapped gas, if you ate incorrectly, related to your period, and I doubt it is nerve damage, like a pinched nerve. If it doesn't go away, and if you can't do some yoga for the back to relieve the pain, and if a massage doesn't work, call the doctor in a few days.

  5. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of the pain in my shoulder blade?
I have this horrible pain in my shoulder blade. It's a little lower than the shoulder blade and there seems to be a ball formed around there. The pain shoots up towards my neck and even travels towards behind my right eye. I think it may be a pinched nerve. I try massaging it and it gets rid of some pain but it doesn't get rid of that ball.

    • ANSWER:
Here is a good muscle release for your back as well as your neck, you may need that one as well. Do the back one first. When you are done with them if you still have a problem with the ball, have someone press directly onto it for thirty seconds. then lean forward some so there is a stretch on the muscles in that area. Release the pressure but hold your new position for another 30 seconds. Here are the methods of release:
      For your neck:
place your hand alongside your head and push your thumb in under your ear and place it on the muscle there. Take your fingers and place them on the back of your neck on the muscles there. Press them together and hold a good amount of pressure on them. Then relax, take a deep breath an happening, the muscle going limp under the pressure. Continue to hold until the entire muscle has gone limp.
      Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg or even over it if you can, the more over the better it is. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.

  6. QUESTION:
Vertebrae pain in upper spinal cord between shoulder blades?
Every now and then when I wake up I get this stiff, knotted pain in the vertebrae between my shoulder blades. I can feel it the most when I take deep breaths or am carrying things, such as bags. I can usually get rid of it by laying on my stomach, taking a deep breath and having someone put some pressure on the vertebrae that hurt. It kind of feels like they're out of alignment. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
You are describing your thoracic spine http://www.spineuniverse.com/displaygraphic.php/171/spine3-BB.jpg.

I'm assuming you're in good health, with no chronic health problems, don't take medications, and haven't had any trauma lately (vehicle accident, falling down, etc.).

You may want to read about vertebral subluxation at http://www.echiropractic.net/what_is_a_subluxation.htm. Sometimes seeing a chiropractor and having your back "popped", then treated with heat or EMS (an electrical muscle stimulation) can help symptoms like yours.

I have occasional difficulties in the same area as you mention, and I have had chiropractic treatment that helped my symptoms.

  11. QUESTION:
What could be causing this weird pain in my back?
Right beside my back bone in the upper-middle part of my back (right below my left shoulder blade) there is a strange pain that comes up every once in a while. It's kind of a sharp pain in the muscle area right there but when I try to massage it, it feels like I may be bruising it. I also will randomly feel that area start to tingle then the entire left side of my back (the muscle part) feels like it's "fallen asleep". What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

    • ANSWER:
You have a tight muscle that under some movements cause it to go into pain. You have to release your back muscles to free it back up and here's how to do that:
      Back:
      (do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

  12. QUESTION:
Why does my shoulder blade hurt?
I am 21 years old and an athlete. I have a pain that is located on my right shoulder blade. It doesn't hurt when I inhale or take a deep breath. It doesn't hurt when I am standing or lifting anything. It hurts whenever I bend over. It also hurts when I lay on my right side and when I am not sitting up straight. I was wondering if anyone has a solution for this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
It's a tight muscle in there somewhere that those situations cause it to go into pain at those times. Freeing up the back muscles usually releases the tight ones causing that pain and here's how to free them up:
      Back:
(do while sitting on a chair)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front, and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm as straight as possible. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, then release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
