Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Why do I have pain between my shoulder blades when jogging?
When I jog i'll begin to develop a slight pain between my shoulder blades. It's not a sharp pain, it's just like my muscles got knotted up. I think it has something to do with my breathing but it could be a muscle cramp. Does anyone else experience these and are there any ways to relieve them?

  2. QUESTION:
Is it common to have neck and shoulder pain one day after a massage?
I had a massage yesterday thinking it would help the pain I have been having in my shoulders and neck. There are knots in my neck and shoulder blades. The massage felt great a little sore while she was working, but once I was done I felt amazing. Today my neck and shoulders hurt like they did before the massage. Should I consult a doctor? Is there home remedies? What should I do?

    • ANSWER:
first of all, i am a massage therapist and the pain you describe is common for someone who hasn't had a massage before or hasn't had one for a long time. sometimes, bruising as well can occur if the body is not accustomed to it. it is like exercising intensely if you haven't done that for awhile, too and feeling the pain the day after as well. so, in the mean time, you must take it easy (this is what you should have done for a few hours after the massage) , drink lots of liquids. no sodas and junkfood and allow your body to capture the effects of massage in a day to three days. if it still hurts, see a doctor or chiropractor. i would see a chiropractor first as your pain could possibly stem from spinal misalignment besides from musculature pain...

  3. QUESTION:
how can i get rid of the worst shoulder pain ever?
im 14 years old, and starting in about november, i was getting bad shoulder pains in the same spot. it was bad then, but now it's only gotten worse. i used to be able to ignore it but now it's so painful that i can't even focus in school, this knot is huge too, it begins below the shoulder blade, then a little bit of it is under the shoulder blade and then the rest it about up to my neck. i used to think it was because i carry a somewhat heavy backpack all day at school, but it's been chronic on only one shoulder. ive tried the rolling on the golf or tennis ball thing, and ive gotten my mom to massage it, nothing seems to work. i don't know what i can do to make this pain go away. i take ibuprofen but it wears off quickly. i just want all this pain in my shoulder to go away. should i see a doctor about this? or is there another alternative? please help this pain is about to drive me crazy.

Why is my upper back right side under my shoulder blade hurting?
I have pain on the right side upper back, right under the shoulder blade, when i breathe it feels like my lungs are having trouble filling with air..cant sneeze properly either..i start to and go through the motions but nothing comes out..my husband says there's a small knot where it hurts and its feverish sometimes...i just wish i knew what was going on...i havent picked anything heavy up or anything like that..can you help me?

    • ANSWER:
See a doctor. We can't diagnose you here.

You might simply have strained the muscle, and this can be done even in your sleep -- it happens to me. Sometimes, when I have back trouble like this, some mechanism kicks in to prevent me from sneezing because sneezing can actually cause additional back strain. I'll feel an urge to sneeze, but it goes away.

But to be on the safe side, you need to have a doctor check you out.

  6. QUESTION:
I have a stabbing pain under my shoulder blade. What could it be?
I have a stabbing pain under my left shoulder blade. Yesterday it was just a nasty ache. I first noticed it when I got out of bed. I couldn't turn my head to the left for the first few hours. At first I thought it was just a knot, but I got 2 good massages which did nothing for the pain. What could it be?

    • ANSWER:
A very bad ache that takes away your breathe, it grabs you in such a way that you can't stand up could be a kidney stone trying to get through. This is a pain that not many fell but once felt, you'll never forget it. Then of course you have Liver, kidneys, it could be a pleurisy (infection of the lining of the inner lung area) it might just be a muscle that's been abused and is sore from the spine. If it continues or gets worse then see your doctor. Not much can be done other then keep an eye on it, they can of course give you something for the pain.

  7. QUESTION:
What causes such severe back pain while walking?
I woke up one morning about 2 weeks ago with a sore knot right between my left shoulder blade and spine. I ignored it but now it has gotten worse and ONLY hurts when i am walking. I can walk for about 15 minutes before it kicks in and the pain is HORRIBLE..like that section of my back is filled with fire! What the heck is this?

    • ANSWER:
It's a pinched muscle causing that pain. When you walk you keep shifting the pressure on and off it to make the pain feel worse. You have to release the muscles in your back to get rid of the pain. Here's how to do that:
      Back:
      (do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

  8. QUESTION:
How to get a knot out under my shoulder blade?
I'm 13 and I have a HUGE knot under my shoulder blade. I play baseball and play video games and when I play baseball I threw sidearm ever since I had. Can you guys pleassseeeeeee help me

    • ANSWER:
Rubbing on the tightened up knots in the natural direction of the muscle can relieve them by improving blood flow to the area.

Applying a hot wet cloth can improve blood circulation and relax the muscle. A hot shower or warm bath is best for this. Letting the hot or warm water sit or flow onto the knots and tightened areas will help relax as well as relieve much pain. Heat helps relax the muscle and loosen it up, cold actually stiffens them up more.

Stretching the whole body and focusing on the knotted and tightened up areas can ease the cramps or spasms and relieve the pain. This should be done gently and gradually so you do not over strain yourself. This will also increase the blood circulation.

Calcium is very important in the ridding and preventing of muscle knots. Drinking skim milk and eating yogurt or even taking a calcium supplement every day is best. Potassium is also very important in reducing muscle cramps or knots, foods such as bananas and potatoes are both high in potassium as well as apple cider. Acidic foods should be avoided, acidy foods interfere with the body's capability of absorbing calcium.

Drinking plenty of liquids, especially water, every day continuously will help dramatically reduce your current muscle knots as well as prevent future ones.

Chamomile tea is a natural muscle relaxer containing amino acids that can relieve muscle spasms and cramps and knots. Honey is also a great prevention of muscle spasms and cramps, so putting honey in your chamomile tea would be a good option.

  9. QUESTION:
Is Icy Hot good for relieving muscle knots?
I have a very painful knot underneath my right shoulder blade. Can Icy Hot help to relieve the pain? I've never used Icy Hot before, so how hot does it get?

    • ANSWER:
It may give you some temporary relief but that's about it. Knots are tight muscles and to get rid of tight muscles you have to free them up so freeing up the muscles in your back will get rid of that pain and here's how to free them up:
      Back:
      (do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold.
